Luxembourg-based Luxair has ordered two 737-8s direct from Boeing and will lease another pair, which are likely to be replaced with two more purchased aircraft in 2027.

“The purchase of up to four Boeing 737-8 aircraft is considered as an essential part of the investments in the future of Luxair,” the airline said. Luxair currently operates a fleet of 19 aircraft, comprising 11 De Havilland Canada Dash 8-400s, four 737-700s and four 737-800s.

On March 3, Luxair’s board approved an order for two 737-8s, which will be delivered in the first quarter of 2026. “Meanwhile, as a bridge solution, Luxair will temporarily lease from Boeing two other 737-8s which will be operated by its own [Luxair’s] crews, until the delivery of new aircraft,” the airline said.

The two leased MAXs will enter service in summer 2023. Luxair said it is also negotiating an order for two more MAXs for delivery in 2027, when the two-aircraft lease ends.

Luxair is planning to configure the MAXs with up to 186 seats, giving passengers “greater than average seat spacing” of 30 inches. The 737-8 can accommodate 162 to 210 passengers.

The 737-8 has a 3,100 nm range, increasing the range of Luxair’s fleet. The new aircraft will be deployed on existing services to Dubai, Cape Verde and Senegal, as well as new longer-distance destinations.

“Today marks just the beginning of the journey of securing the long-term future of Luxair,” Luxair CEO Gilles Feith said. “Much more is yet to come.
