Aeromexico revealed at this year’s FITUR – Feria Internacional de Turismo that it is to boost frequency on its route between Mexico City and Madrid as it consolidates its future Boeing 787 Dreamliner operations in the European market. The carrier will introduce the 787 on flights to both London and Madrid this spring, adding to its existing deployment to Paris since November 2013.
The growth in frequency to the Spanish capital will see Aeromexico add three additional weekly rotations to its current daily schedule. The existing flight will continue to be flown by a 777, but the three new rotations will be operated by the new Dreamliners, configured with 243 seats, including a 32-seat First Class cabin. With the new flight, Aeromexico will offer nearly 5,400 seats per week between Mexico City and Madrid and provide enhanced connection opportunities to more than 40 destinations in Mexico, 17 in the United States, 12 in Latin America and one in Canada.
The arrival of the 787 on the Mexico City – London Heathrow will boost capacity on the route by 41.3 per cent due to the type’s larger capacity than the 767-200s that are currently utilised on the three times weekly flights in this market. According to its GDS, Aeromexico will first introduce the 787 alongside the 767s in mid-March 2014, permanently replacing the older generation airliner from June 2014.
"We are aware that the arrival of the Boeing 787 to all of our European destinations – Madrid, London and Paris – less than one year after introducing it to our fleet, will revolutionise our customers' travel experience," said Sergio Allard, executive commercial director, Aeromexico during FITUR.
Aeromexico faces direct competition from Europe’s major flag carriers in these three capital city markets with Air France offering flights from Paris CDG, British Airways from London Heathrow and Iberia from Madrid Barajas. In the analysis below we look at how well Aeromexico competes with the European heavyweights.
