Every week Routesonline provides statistics highlighting airline and airport activity in an individual domestic market. We take a look at the last five year’s schedules as a snapshot and compare seat capacity, showing which airlines and airports are growing and which are constraining and identifying trends.
The data is all supplied by OAG Aviation using its OAG Schedules Analyser tool.
Scheduled Network Capacity from Mexico
Our analysis of published schedules for the past five years shows that international air capacity from Mexico has risen from 15,974,575 available seats in 2010 to 20,582,030 available seats in 2014. This represents an average annual growth of 7.2 per cent across the period. In the past year capacity increased a significant 10.5 per cent.
Scheduled Network Capacity from Mexico by Airline
Aeromexico remained the largest international carrier from Mexico in 2014 after boosting its local capacity by 17.6 per cent in 2014 to 2.75 million seats. This has boosted its overall share of domestic capacity from 12.6 per cent in 2013 to 13.4 per cent in 2014.
US carrier American Airlines is the second largest domestic operator with a 11.1 per cent share, capacity up 8.3 per cent on 2013, while United Airlines is the third largest operator with a 11.0 per cent share, capacity up 15.0 per cent on 2013.
Scheduled Network Capacity from Mexico by Airport
Mexico City International Airport, Aeropuerto Internacional Benito Juárezis the largest international facility in Mexico with a 35.1 per cent share of total available capacity within the country in 2014 with a 7.4 per cent growth in seats versus 2013. It is followed by Cancun International Airport (31.2 per cent share) and Guadalajara International Airport (8.2 per cent share).
Del Bajío International Airport, which serves the city of León and the state capital, Guanajuato witnessed the largest rise in international capacity among Mexico's ’s ten largest international airports in 2014 with available seats increasing 55.6 per cent versus 2013. Growth of more than 20 per cent was also recorded by Puerto Vallarta Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport (25.0 per cent), Cozumel International Airport (28.3 per cent) and Morelia General Francisco Mujica International Airport (22.0 per cent).
Scheduled Network Capacity from Mexico by Aircraft Type
The chart below shows which aircraft types were most prevalent in Mexico's international market. The schedule data shows the Boeing 737-800 (738) is the most widely used aircraft type in the country with a 20.2 per cent share of available seats with its overall network capacity rising between 2013 and 2014 by 5.0 per cent from 3.96 million seats to 4.16 million seats.
The second most utilised aircraft type in Mexico’s international market is the Airbus A320 (320) with a 16.7 per cent share, while third most widely operated by network capacity is the Airbus A319 (319) with a 8.7 per cent share.
The biggest rises in annual capacity among the top ten aircraft types were recorded by the Boeing 737-900 (DH4) with a 87.6 per cent rise in available domestic seats in 2014 versus 2013 and the Boeing 737-700 (winglets) (73W) with a 3.8 per cent rise. The largest decline in annual capacity was recorded by the Boeing 737-700 (73G) with a fall of 25.4 per cent versus 2013.
