American Airlines will launch eight new routes from Miami International Airport (MIA) for the 2023/24 northern hemisphere winter season, buttressing its presence in a market it already dominates.
The carrier, which has around a 60% passenger market share at MIA, will operate about 10% more capacity from the airport in the upcoming winter schedule versus the previous winter season.
Six of the new routes will commence in November, including previously revealed 2X-daily flights to Portland International Airport (PDX) in Oregon. That service will commence on Nov. 5 with a Boeing 737-8 aircraft, preempting Alaska Airlines’ planned launch on the route—which is not currently operated by any carrier—later in November.
Additional MIA routes to be launched by American in November include service to: Buffalo, New York; Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Lexington, Kentucky; Wichita, Kansas; and Wilmington (ILM), North Carolina. American will kick off those five routes from Nov. 11, operating all of them 1X-weekly on Saturdays on a seasonal basis through March 30, 2024.
ILM notes in a statement that MIA will become the eighth destination that American serves from the North Carolina airport. “We’re excited that American Airlines, ILM’s largest carrier, is adding a new nonstop to a top unserved city,” ILM Director Jeff Bourk says. “Business travelers and vacationers can now conveniently fly nonstop to Miami as well as easily connect to numerous destinations in Latin America and the Caribbean.”
Two more MIA route additions are planned. From Dec. 20, American will launch year-round 1X-daily service between Miami and Sacramento, California’s capital. Starting Feb. 3, 2024, the carrier will open service between MIA and Governor’s Harbour Airport (GHB) in the Bahamas.
The MIA-GHB route, to be exclusive to American, will be flown 2X-weekly with an Embraer E175 aircraft. With the flights to GHB, the airline will operate to six airports in the Bahamas from MIA, including multiple daily flights to Nassau’s Lynden Pindling International Airport.
In addition to the new routes, American will boost frequencies on a number of MIA routes on a seasonal basis. For example, it will fly 6X-daily to Cancun, Mexico, from Dec. 20 to Jan. 7 and 3X-daily to Cartagena, Colombia, from Dec. 5 to April 3.
American's domestic MIA winter schedule will include 5X-daily service to Nashville from Dec 20 to Jan. 7 and 3X-daly flights to Denver from Dec. 20 to April 3.
American will operate 380 peak-day departures from MIA during the winter schedule, with service to 150 destinations, including more than 85 exclusive routes.
“Next winter, we’re proud to continue to invest in the undisputed gateway to Latin America and the Caribbean, a true point of pride for our more than 14,000 locally-based team members,” American VP-MIA Hub Operations Juan Carlos Liscano says in a statement.
During the winter season, the oneworld carrier will operate 140 peak-day departures from MIA to more than 70 destinations in the Caribbean and Latin America.
Overall, American will operate more than 2,250 weekly flights from U.S. airports to 90 destinations in the region—a 10% year-over-year increase.
