The government of Angola has opened an international tender for the management of the newly-built Agostinho Neto International Airport serving the capital of Luanda.
The concession is for a period of 25 years, which can be extended by another 15 years, according to Ricardo Viegas D’Abreu, Angola’s transport minister. The application deadline for the tender is Feb. 16, 2024. Applications from individual companies and consortiums will be considered, D’Abreu says in a statement.
“It will certainly be a very competitive tender,” he says, citing “various manifestations of interest we have received from [potential] investors [and] airport managers.”
D’Abreu adds that “wide-ranging reform” in areas including aviation and tourism has “created the conditions” for the new airport to be successful.
The new $3.8 billion airport is located about 26 mi. from the center of Luanda. It includes a terminal building capable of handling 15 million passengers per year, a 13,780-ft. northern runway and 12,467-ft. southern runway, as well as a hotel, shops and restaurants.
The new airport is replacing the existing Quatro de Fevereiro International Airport (LAD) as Angola’s main international gateway and becomes a new hub for the country’s flag-carrier, TAAG Angola Airlines.
