Bahrain’s ambitious airport modernisation programme (AMP) has begun with enabling works such as relocating utilities away from the footprint of the passenger terminal, kick-starting the process recently. Delegates at Routes Middle East & Africa had the opportunity to take the AMP journey by visiting the location of the project during a special tour organised by our host this morning. The visit also highlighted the heritage of the facility while delegates were able to enjoy an authentic Arabian coffee, experience and try out some of our luxurious lounges and visit airside areas to have a look at the state-of-the-art Ground Service Equipment and the location of the AMP project.
Recently, work began on the passenger terminal building itself. Project completion is expected in about four years. Global US-based firm Hill International is the Project Management Consultant on the AMP while Aéroport de Paris Ingérierie (ADPi) is the Design and Supervision Consultant for the construction.
“Bahrain Airport Company has been committed to operating BIA as a world-class facility and 2014 was a significant year in this respect as we went to great lengths to improve passenger experience, airport facilities, infrastructure and ground operations in line with international standards and strategies,” said Mohamed Yousif Al Binfalah, chief executive officer Bahrain Airport Company.
“Now, the time is right to embark on the creation of a modern passenger terminal building designed to world class standards. Our aim is to provide a boutique setting that offers all the conveniences found in a global airport yet maintains the friendly and efficient service which has been BIA’s unique differentiator and the root of our success,” he added.
Once completed, the 201,467 square metre terminal will be four times the size of the current airport. It has been designed to accommodate 14 million passengers per annum and will have a baggage handling capacity of 4,700 bags per peak hour.
The new terminal will feature a 4,600 square metre departures hall and two premium class check-in halls spanning a combined area of more than 5,000m2.There will be 108 check-in counters, up to 24 passport control booths, up to 28 security lanes, a 9,000m2 duty free, retail, and food and beverage zone, airline premium class lounges, and 24 contact bridge departure gates.
On arrivals, 36 passport control booths, five e-gates, eight baggage reclaim belts, and a 1,000m2 Duty Free shop will feature. Key support infrastructure will include up to 7,000 car park spaces.
The Passenger Terminal Building at BIA has been designed for LEED Gold Specification in line with global industry standards, and will also feature the latest in energy and water efficiency.
