Independent French carrier Europe Airpost is to launch a new link between Bordeaux and the Austrian capital Vienna during the coming summer schedule as it continues to develop a strategy supporting connectivity from Europe’s regions.
The new twice weekly route will operate on Mondays and Fridays between May 1, 2015 and September 7, 2015, enabling passengers to enjoy long weekend or week long visits to each destination. The flights will be operated using a Boeing 737-300 configured with 147 seats.
“This new flight to Vienna is part of Europe Airpost’s development strategy for seasonal scheduled routes, further cementing its position as a French airline serving European regions,” said Jean-François Dominiak, general manager, Europe Airpost.
“It supports these regions in their economic and tourism development by meeting the travel requirements of their inhabitants, who will appreciate the punctuality of our flights and quality of our services, and benefit from our attractive prices,” he added.
Europe Airpost, a member of the ASL Aviation international group, is no stranger to the Bordeaux market and although this is its first scheduled route from the French city, it has been serving the local market for more than 15 years with flights for tour operators to holiday destinations during the summer season. This summer it will be flying to Lanzarote and Rhodes from Bordeuax, while it also operates a freight link to Paris Charles de Gaulle from Bordeaux five nights per week.
In 2014 Bordeaux–Mérignac Airport welcomed nearly five million passengers, ranking it as the 5th busiest French regional airport. Thanks to investments made over the past five years, the airport boasts the highest growth rate amongst the main French regional airports in 2014 (+ 7.1%); the number of destinations has risen from 39 to 85 and the number of airlines serving the airport has leapt from 17 to 27.
On the international front, Bordeaux–Mérignac Airport stands out by its growth strategy in the low-cost flight sector with the creation of a specific air terminal in 2010 called billi, allowing the airport to double its volume of international traffic to 2.2 million in 2014. It has been so successful that an extension of the billi terminal is already being built and should be operational during the summer of 2015.
The Europe Airpost service will be Bordeaux’s only link to Vienna and in fact its only scheduled service to Austria. As the chart, below, illustrates more than 5,000 bi-directional O&D passengers a year are flying on the city pair.
