Eurowings, as part of the ongoing fragmentation and restructuring of Lufthansa’s long-haul offering, will introduce widebody Airbus A330 aircraft on 12 October 2015 from Cologne and Hamburg to Palma Mallorca. The A330s will then begin long-haul service on 2 November 2015.
The flights will operate less-than-daily service during the launch phase of the aircraft, which are wet leased from the Lufthansa-Turkish Airlines joint venture SunExpress. The Eurowings A330s are formerly Eva Air aircraft. The new Eurowings Europe GmbH was launched in Vienna on 10 August.
While these aircraft are wet leased – meaning SunExpress will provide crews and operate them – Eurowings Europe will have its own dedicated cabin crew and operations staff at several European bases. Details of the first short-haul A330 flights can be found at sister site AirlineRoute.net.
Eurowings last year announced plans for long-haul A330 flights under the Lufthansa “Wings” plan to operating under the SunExpress Deutschland operating certificate for intercontinental flights between Cologne/Bonn (CGN) and Florida, Southern Africa and the Indian Ocean.
On 2 November Eurowings will launch intercontinental A330 service to Veradero, Cuba, followed by Caribbean destinations Puerto Plata and Punta Cana. In addition, the airline will offer nonstop service to Bangkok and Phuket in Thailand, as well as Dubai.
The A330s will have 21 premium seats and 289 in economy, including a 46-seat economy “More Comfort” zone. This 310 seat configuration is a major change compared to Lufthansa’s three-class A330s which have 217-221 seats.
