German carrier Eurowings is rebuilding its schedule from Nuremberg and Hannover, having suspended many leisure routes from the two airports at the onset of the pandemic.
The Lufthansa subsidiary intends to base one aircraft at each airport during the northern winter 2023-24 season, with Hannover Airport (HAJ) to receive a second aircraft during summer 2024. The airline’s winter network will focus heavily on the Canary Islands and Egypt, while next summer will center more on Italy and Greece.
“Out of the crisis, we have fundamentally changed Eurowings and developed into Germany’s largest vacation airline,” Eurowings CEO Jens Bischof says. “We will now expand this position in a targeted manner and also strengthen ourselves very significantly at Nuremberg and Hanover airports.”
Eurowings will serve four destinations from Nuremberg Airport (NUE) during winter 2023-24, flying to the Spanish points of Gran Canaria (2X-weekly) and Palma de Mallorca (3X), alongside Hurghada (3X) and Marsa Alam (1X) in Egypt. Next summer, the LCC plans to offer service to Heraklion (3X), Rhodes (2X) and Preveza (2X) in Greece, as well as Palma (14X). The move marks a rise from the airline’s current summer schedule from NUE, which consists of just one twice-daily route to Palma.
“The opening of the base speaks for the trust that Eurowings has in the potential of our market and in the cooperation with the airport,” NUE Managing Director Michael Hupe says. “The stationing also contributes to further diversification of the tourist program.”
From HAJ, the winter flight schedule includes five destinations, comprising Gran Canaria (2X), Palma (4X) and Tenerife (2X), alongside Hurghada (2X) and Pristina (1X), Kosovo. Palma will continue through summer 2024, operating 14X-weekly, while flights to six destinations in Italy will commence.
Eurowings will serve Rome four times per week, Catania and Naples 3X-weekly, and Bari, Olbia and Lamezia Terme twice a week each. Elsewhere, Malaga, Spain, will be 4X-weekly; Faro, Portugal will be 2X-weekly; and Thessaloniki, Greece, will be 2X-weekly.
“These new routes are also very encouraging for our traffic development,” HAJ CEO Martin Roll says. “This will significantly strengthen our position as a tourist airport in the north. Italy as a holiday destination—that has been on our wish list for a long time.”
At present, Eurowings serves three destinations from HAJ, flying to Palma (14X), Thessaloniki (2X) and Pristina (1X).
