Low-cost carrier, flydubai has announced its plans to launch new passenger services from Al Maktoum International at Dubai World Central (DWC).
Flights to Amman, Beirut, Chittagong, Doha, Kathmandu, Kuwait and Muscat will become available from DWC from October 25, 2015, while flights to these destinations from Dubai International will also remain available.
The development of DWC will allow the United Arab Emirates’ aviation sector to continue to grow over the next decade. The recent decision to expand capacity at the existing terminal at DWC to 26 million by 2018, flydubai has taken the opportunity to offer its passengers the choice of flying from both of Dubai’s main airports.
Ghaith Al Ghaith, Chief Executive Officer of flydubai, commenting on the announcement, said: “DWC is the new frontier of aviation in the UAE. There are very few international cities that do not have more than one airport and Dubai is planning to build the world’s largest airport.”
Flydubai will progressively grow its operations at DWC over the next few years, as well as offering a number of cargo operations under the flydubai Cargo brand. The airline is also due to take delivery of more than 100 new Boeing aircraft by 2023.
“We know from listening to the feedback from our passengers that they value the convenience and flexibility of Terminal 2 at Dubai International. We believe that our new operations at DWC will offer the same enhanced travel experience to our passengers and will enable us to cover more of Dubai,” added Ghaith Al Ghaith.
In its sixth year of operation, flydubai will see the fulfilment of its order placed in 2008 for 50 aircraft, when the last aircraft from this order arrives later this year. The airline’s order for 100 more aircraft will include the first delivery of the new model Boeing 737 MAX.
Meanwhile, flydubai has announced it will further extend its activities at Dubai International Airport with the addition of a new route to Eritrea.
Direct flights between Dubai and the capital city of Asmara will commence on October 25, 2015, operating four-times-weekly. The flights will mark the start of the first direct link between Eritrea and the UAE, and is the second African destination added to the flydubai network after Hargeisa, which began in June.
In line with the growing trade and tourism ties between the UAE and East and North Africa, flydubai launched its first African route to Djibouti in 2009, followed by Addis Ababa in 2011. Last year, the airline expanded its African network even further by adding operations to Burundi, Tanzania, Uganda, and Rwanda.
With the addition of Asmara, flydubai operates 60 weekly flights to 13 destinations in Africa overall.
