The new route will mark the first from the Scottish Airport to the Bavarian capital, and will commence on May 16, 2015 until October 3, 2015 with a flight time of two hours 15 minutes.
Munich is the latest announcement included in a long line of new routes revealed by Glasgow Airport, which has also included flights to destinations such as Bordeaux, Marrakech, Cuba, Las Vegas and Halifax, Nova Scotia.
“This is yet more fantastic news for Glasgow Airport. We are delighted to offer our customers another top European destination to fly to from next summer, underlining our commitment to providing greater choice.”
Francois Bourienne
Commercial Director at Glasgow Airport
Glasgow Airport has also seen the arrival of Ryanair, who officially opened a new base at the airport in October, serving seven European destinations across winter, and an extra two destinations throughout summer 2015.
“Munich is world-renowned for its beautiful 19th century architecture, as well as its annual Oktoberfest celebrations which I’m sure will be a huge draw for our customers. We are looking forward to working in partnership with Lufthansa to bring more new and exciting destinations to Glasgow,” added Bourienne.
Denise Hill, Head of International Marketing at VisitScotland said: “We work in partnership with airports across Scotland to improve Scotland's global connectivity and this announcement now sees Glasgow linked not only to the city of Munich, but onward via this major Lufthansa hub to numerous further destinations in Europe and beyond".
Germany is one of the largest export nations for Scottish produce, totalling an average of £1.5 billion per year. The nation sits only fourth behind the USA, France and the Netherlands with other growing export markets falling behind including Australia, China, India, Japan, Russia and United Arab Emirates.
The German flag carrier will be the sole operator on the route, the third link between Germany and Glasgow, alongside its own flight from Dusseldorf (operated by Germanwings since September 2014) and a link to Berlin from low-fare carrier easyJet. Germany is already Glasgow's second largest international market, with 51,000 German visitors currently travelling to the city each year and contributing £12 million to the local economy.
Our own analysis of MIDT data shows that around 125,000 bi-directional O&D passengers have travelled between Glasgow and destinations across Germany in each of the past three years. Munich is currently the second largest unserved market in the country from Glasgow, after Frankfurt, with an estimated 7,000 plus passengers flying on the city pair via other airports during 2013.
