IndiGo will add its 85th domestic airport served, with flights to Gondia Airport (GBD) in the state of Maharashtra set to launch next month.
From Dec. 1, the carrier will fly daily between Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (HYD) and GBD. GDB will be the 117th airport in its network, which includes 32 international destinations. IndiGo carries more passengers than any other Indian airline.
The carrier says in a statement that the new GBD-HYD route “will significantly reduce travel time between the cities” and appeal to both business and leisure passengers.
“This enhanced connectivity between [the states of] Telangana and Maharashtra is expected to stimulate economic growth, trade and regional development,” IndiGo says.
Vinay Malhotra, IndiGo’s head of global sales, adds: “People flying from Gondia to Hyderabad will have access to IndiGo’s domestic and international network, which has the potential to bring major economic benefits to the region. Gondia … is considered the gateway to Maharashtra from central and eastern India.”
IndiGo notes Gondia’s economy “is primarily agrarian, with agriculture and forestry serving as crucial sources of livelihood for its residents,” adding, “The region is also celebrated for its traditional arts and crafts, adding to the city's charm.”
Hyderabad, the airlines says, “has a rich cultural legacy, a burgeoning technology economy and a unique blend of cultures … Hyderabad is a hub for information technology and pharmaceutical industries and is home to major tech businesses and research institutions.”
