Mauritius’ main international airport, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport won or came second in three award categories at the ASI Air Service Quality (ASQ) awards for 2014.
The airport won the category for ‘Best Airport in Africa’, ‘Best Improved Airport in Africa’ and won second place for ‘Best Airport by Size: 2-5 Million Passengers’.
Last year, the airport came third in the Africa category for best regional airport, but failed to place anywhere else
The ACI ASQ Awards recognise and reward the best airports in the world according to the ASQ passenger satisfaction survey. It captures passengers’ immediate appraisal from check-in through to departure at the gate in more than 300 airports worldwide.
These awards represent passengers’ views on 34 key service indicators and are an objective and accurate indicator of the top worldwide performing airports with regard to passenger service.
The ASQ Awards are presented in four categories: Best Airport by Region, Best Airport by Size, Best Small Airport and Best Improvement.
Other winners for ‘Best Airport by Region’ include Seoul Incheon for Asia-Pacific, Keflavik for Europe, Guayaquil for Latin America and the Caribbean, Amman for the Middle East, and Indianapolis for North America. World Routes 2015 hosts, Durban also places second after Mauritius for best airport by region in Africa.
In terms of airports by size, Guayaquil in Ecuador placed for two - five million passengers per year, while Haikou in China placed first for five – 15 million. For 15 – 25 million passengers, Seoul Gimpo in Korea came first, and New Delhi in India places first for 25 – 40 million passengers. Finally, Seoul Incheon in South Korea ranked first for airports exceeding 40 million passengers per year.
Aside from Mauritius who won ‘Best Improvement by Region’ for Africa, Kolkata in India came top for airports in the Asia-Pacific region. St. Petersburg in Russia topped the rankings for Europe, while Santo Domingo in Dominican Republic came first for Latin America and the Caribbean. Finally for North America, San Antonio in Texas, USA, placed first for best improvement by region.
For ‘Best Small Airport by Region’ which includes airports with fewer than two million passengers per year, those who ranked top include Upington in Africa, Langkawi in the Asia-Pacific region, Murcia in Europe, Culiacan in Latin America and the Caribbean, and Victoria in North America.
