Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) and Delta Air Lines have started work on a $242.5 million upgrade of the airport’s Terminal 1.

Delta, which has a hub at MSP,  will invest $60 million in a project that will include a “full refresh” of around 75 gates controlled by the airline. Delta operates 332 daily departures on peak days at MSP.

The Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC), which runs MSP, will invest $182.5 million in the upgrade.

Construction work in MSP Terminal 1’s D and F concourses started in late October. Renovation work on the C concourse is scheduled to start in February 2024.

“Improvements on concourses A, B, G and the skyway bridge connecting concourses C and G are scheduled for 2025,” MSP says in a statement. “Delta’s gates will remain open during the construction, with the most intense construction work scheduled during overnight hours.”

According to MAC, the upgrade will cover 378,000 ft.2 in Terminal 1. MSP has two passenger terminals.

“We’re proud to work with and have the support of Delta to deliver an expansive interior makeover that will create an exceptional airport experience for Delta passengers as they make their way from security checkpoints to their gates,” MAC CEO Brian Ryks says. “It’s another major investment to create brighter, more modern spaces.”

Jeannine Ashworth, Delta’s vice president of operations at MSP, says the project is “the latest example of Delta’s ongoing work to modernize the terminal and elevate the travel experience for our MSP customers.”

Airlines collectively operated 460 peak-day departures from MSP in October. MSP notes seat capacity in October 2023 was up 18% over October 2022. MSP handled 31.2 million passengers in 2022, 79% of 2019 levels.
