A Pictorial Journey Through Bahrain Airport’s History

While the first chartered flight may have landed in Bahrain in 1927, the first scheduled commercial flight only arrived in the Kingdom in 1932, en-route from London to Delhi, carrying 24 passengers and establishing Bahrain as the Gulf’s first international airport. By 1937 regular service commenced using Short’s Empire seaplanes where the “landing strip” was a stretch of water with the passenger terminal located nearby on dry land. With the new US$100 million terminal inaugurated in 1994, Bahrain International Airport moved to an expanded handling capacity of nine million passengers a year. The airport continues its successful journey of success and growth, and is today well on its way to becoming one of finest airports in the world.
