European low-cost carrier, Wizz Air has announced its plans to launch direct flights from Glasgow Airport to Vilnius.
The twice weekly service to the Lithuanian capital will begin operating on September 16, 2015 and will operate year-round on Wednesdays and Sundays.
Paul White, business development manager at Glasgow Airport, said: “This is yet further good news from Wizz Air which has gone from strength-to-strength since its arrival at Glasgow Airport two years ago. It has continued to respond to demand by adding direct flights to popular European destinations and the new Vilnius service will no doubt prove extremely popular with both Lithuanian and Scottish passengers.”
It will be the first time Vilnius has been served as a destination from Glasgow Airport and is the second biggest city of the Baltic states, renowned for being home to one of the largest surviving medieval quarters in Europe.
Its Old Town contains almost 2,000 medieval, gothic, renaissance and baroque buildings, and it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1994.
Wizz Air first operated from Glasgow Airport just over two years ago in March 2013, and with the addition of Vilnius the airline now serves a total of seven destinations from Glasgow. Wizz currently serves the Polish cities of Warsaw, Poznan, Katowice and Gdansk, and earlier this month announced direct flights to Budapest and Lublin.
Wizz Air’s Daniel de Carvalho added: “We have recently announced new services from Glasgow to Budapest and Lublin and today I am thrilled to announce our 7th Glasgow route to Vilnius. With fares starting from only GBP 18.49 we hope to see many passengers on board.”
Glasgow Airport is set to welcome a further 13 routes over the next three months including direct flights to Las Vegas, Munich, Prague and Bordeaux. The airport is also set to welcome daily flights from Canadian airline, WestJet on May 30, 2015 between Glasgow and Halifax in Nova Scotia.
Glasgow has seen a considerable rise in passenger numbers, with an increase in business traffic to London and UK destinations.
With 30 airlines serving more than 110 destinations worldwide, including Canada, the US, the Caribbean, Europe, North Africa and the Gulf, Glasgow Airport is also Scotland’s principal long-haul airport.
