The Icelandic carrier plans to extend its Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport flight schedule, operating services between BWI and Reykjavik a month earlier than planned.
Demand for the route was much more than the airline anticipated, and so flights between the two cities will also run year-round rather than seasonally, and will operate four days a week from May 8, 2015 – June 3, 2015.
Frequency will then be increased to five times weekly, operating Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and the route will operated with Airbus A321 aircraft.
Passengers from BWI will be able to connect to Copenhagen and London, as well as Paris, Berlin, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Milan, Rome and Dublin among others.
"Ticket sales on both sides of the Atlantic as well as in Iceland have been enormously successful. There is clear demand for affordable high quality trans-Atlantic air service to and from Washington, Baltimore and the surrounding mid-Atlantic market," Skúli Mogensen, founder and CEO of WOW Air said.
The Low-cost carrier has grown rapidly since it began in 2011, and in 2014 the airline announced its plans to start services to both BWI and Boston.
“This is great news for our travellers that WOW air has already announced plans to grow its low- fare international service,” said Paul J. Wiedefeld, Chief Executive Officer for BWI Marshall Airport. “We continue working to enhance air service opportunities for our customers.”
International passenger traffic at BWI has also seen an increase, and the airport is expecting construction work to improve the airport to begin early this year. The improvements will see a new secure connector between Concourse D and E, new security checkpoints for domestic and international travellers, and configured airlines gates to support additional international flights.
WOW Air’s new service to Iceland is among a growing number of new international routes for BWI in 2015. Southwest Airlines is on schedule to begin services to San Jose in Costa Rica in March, and to Los Cabos in Mexico in June.
Condor Airlines is set to add a third weekly rotation between BWI and Frankfurt in Germany during the summer of 2015.
