Guy is a Senior Editor for Aviation Week, based in Colorado Springs. Before joining Aviation Week in 2007, Guy was with Flight International, first as technical editor based in the U.K. and most recently as U.S. West Coast editor. Before joining Flight, he was London correspondent for Interavia, part of Jane's Information Group.
In 2013 the Jesse H. Neal award for Best Technical Content was awarded to Guy Norris and Graham Warwick for their Advanced Propulsion feature. He received the 2015 Lauren D. Lyman Award for outstanding achievement in aerospace communications. And in 2018 he was awarded Technology Writer of the Year by the judges of the Aerospace Media Awards.
Guy is also a multiple winner of the Royal Aeronautical Society Aerospace Journalist of the Year Award in the Air Transport, Propulsion and Systems/Technology categories, and in 2006 he received the Royal Aeronautical Society Decade of Excellence Award for sustained achievement in aerospace journalism.
Amongst other works Guy has authored the aerospace section of a science encyclopedia and co-authored, and produced an educational aviation CD-ROM. Guy has also authored more than a dozen books on the histories of Airbus, Boeing and other airframe manufacturers.
General Electric is in the midst of the largest commercial engine production build-up in its history as it meets spiraling demand across the board that by 2010 will be close to hitting the 3,000-engines-per-year mark, more than double that of 2005. These figures do not even fully include the continuing sales success of the CFM56, produced by the GE/Snecma CFM International partnership. Nearly 1,360 CFM56 engines are expected to be produced in 2008, all the cores of which are made by GE at the rate of up to one every 4 hr.
General Electric plans to challenge Pratt & Whitney’s ambitions with its geared turbofan by launching a technology program aimed at developing a “Next Gen” CF34 regional jet engine family by around 2015. The ‘NG34’engine plan is aimed at the burgeoning 70- to 120-passenger market and will share technology under development in the GE-Snecma LEAP56 program, a collaborative effort aimed at a next-generation CFM56. It will also leverage technology development from the larger GEnx engine family, as well as other technology projects within GE.
SBX TESTING: Boeing asserts that by the end of this year, the U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA) should get to test full involvement of the Sea-based X-Band (SBX) radar in the ground-based midcourse missile defense system. Scott Fancher, vice president and general manager of Boeing Missile Defense Systems, says in the next test – slated for summer – the radar “will be playing off-line in a more complex way.” Then, “MDA will then make a final decision and in the last test it will be more involved,” he says.
