Summary

Jeff has been involved in aerospace journalism since the mid 1990s. Prior to joining Aviation Week, Jeff served as managing editor of Launchspace magazine and the International Space Industry Report. He has been the editor and chief of Aviation Week's Aerospace Daily & Defense Report since 2007 and has been a regular contributor to Aviation Week magazine. He received his B.A. from the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va.

DECISION UPGRADE: Under a $49.2 million contract, Ball Aerospace and Technologies will find and integrate science and technology that offers commanders and other Air Force personnel revolutionary ways to make better decisions through advanced interfaces with the service’s systems. Five research areas will be battlespace acoustics, battlespace vision, cognitive systems, collaborative technologies and system controls.

The U.S. Air Force is promoting technical standards for operationally responsive space (ORS) payloads and satellite buses, with an eye toward enabling quick and cost-effective block purchases of small military satellites. The standards effort began in the former Office of Force Transformation (OFT). In December, it transitioned to the Joint ORS office at Kirtland Air Force Base, N.M.

NASA’s partial release of data from a controversial airline safety survey still has left some questions unanswered among observers in Congress and industry. Keeping a promise NASA Administrator Michael Griffin made before lawmakers in October, NASA on the last day of 2007 released a redacted version of data from the $11 million National Aviation Operations Monitoring Service (NAOMS) pilot survey that contained little analysis or illumination of safety trends.
