He has been the editor and chief of Aviation Week's Aerospace Daily & Defense Report since 2007 and has been a regular contributor to Aviation Week magazine. He received his B.A. from the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va.
The Joint Planning and Development Office (JPDO) is having greater input into the research budgets of NASA, FAA and other JPDO-participating agencies, according to Acting Director Robert Pearce. Established in 2003, the JPDO is drawing up plans for moving to a next-generation air transportation system (NGATS) by 2025 that will be capable of handling expected increases in U.S. air traffic. The office includes representatives from FAA, NASA, the Department of Defense, and the Commerce and Homeland Security departments.
The Government Accountability Office (GAO) is recommending that NASA adopt a standardized "knowledge-based" acquisition approach at all of its centers as it tackles the challenges of returning astronauts to the moon and beyond.
NASA is soliciting bids from industry for commercial resupply demonstrations to the International Space Station that would take place between 2008 and 2010. The agency hopes to be able to turn responsibility for supplying the ISS over to industry some time after 2010, when the space shuttle is due to retire, provided "a capability is successfully demonstrated and the government determines it is in its best interest," according to a request for proposals (RFP) released Jan. 18.
