He started his journalism career in 1992 as a freelance writer for Sueddeutsche Zeitung, Germany’s largest daily national newspaper and soon specialised in air transport. Jens joined Aviation Week and Aviation Daily in 2000 as one of the European correspondents. Later his role was expanded to cover international air transport. In 2013 he was named Managing Editor Commercial.

Jens frequently appears on radio and TV to comment on industry matters. In 2003, he received the Hugo Junkers Award of the German aviation press for his coverage of Fairchild Dornier’s bankruptcy. He was named the country’s top travel and air transport writer by the Travel Industry Club three times. Jens graduated from the Munich School of Journalism.

FRANKFURT — The Airbus A400M military transport will not fly at the 2012 Farnborough air show in the U.K., Airbus Military confirmed July 5. The company says the decision is based on “engine issues that happened last week which need further investigation.” It did not elaborate. The A400M also did not participate in the flying display at last year’s Paris air show; engine troubles were the cause back then, too. Airbus is sending the first production standard aircraft, MSN6, to Farnborough. It will be on static display.

Valuable lessons can be learned from the final report by French accident investigation body BEA into the June 1, 2009, crash of Air France Flight 447, which has been attributed to pilot error. Flight 447 was en route from Rio de Janeiro to Paris Charles de Gaulle International Airport when the aircraft entered a zone of heavy weather in the intertropical convergence zone. It is believed that at the start of the sequence of events, the aircraft pitot tubes iced over and provided unreliable speed indications.
