He started his journalism career in 1992 as a freelance writer for Sueddeutsche Zeitung, Germany’s largest daily national newspaper and soon specialised in air transport. Jens joined Aviation Week and Aviation Daily in 2000 as one of the European correspondents. Later his role was expanded to cover international air transport. In 2013 he was named Managing Editor Commercial.
Jens frequently appears on radio and TV to comment on industry matters. In 2003, he received the Hugo Junkers Award of the German aviation press for his coverage of Fairchild Dornier’s bankruptcy. He was named the country’s top travel and air transport writer by the Travel Industry Club three times. Jens graduated from the Munich School of Journalism.
Air Berlin CEO Joachim Hunold said Thursday he plans to step down at the end of the month and will be replaced on an interim basis by Hartmut Mehdorn, former CEO of German railway Deutsche Bahn and previous executive board member at Airbus. Hunold said he wanted to give way for a successor who could push through the new restructuring program, called Shape and Size.
SAS Group’s new CEO Rickard Gustafson will launch a “new strategic approach” for the Scandinavian airline in the fall, after the carrier posted its best quarterly results since 2008.
Premium international air travel rose by 6.4% in June, but growth is expected to slow in the coming months, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) says in its June Premium Traffic Monitor. According to IATA, economy travel was up by 4.8% in the period. The association believes the lower rates reflect slower world trade growth and weakening business confidence. The fact that economy travel did not recede is seen as an indication that it is less impacted by high fuel prices than many expected.
