He started his journalism career in 1992 as a freelance writer for Sueddeutsche Zeitung, Germany’s largest daily national newspaper and soon specialised in air transport. Jens joined Aviation Week and Aviation Daily in 2000 as one of the European correspondents. Later his role was expanded to cover international air transport. In 2013 he was named Managing Editor Commercial.
Jens frequently appears on radio and TV to comment on industry matters. In 2003, he received the Hugo Junkers Award of the German aviation press for his coverage of Fairchild Dornier’s bankruptcy. He was named the country’s top travel and air transport writer by the Travel Industry Club three times. Jens graduated from the Munich School of Journalism.
European Transport Commissioner Siim Kallas is urging the air transport industry to introduce a set of quality standards to avoid the kind of huge disruption in air travel witnessed recently during inclement weather.
EasyJet anticipates a larger deficit in the first half of its fiscal year 2010/2011 ending in March. The pretax loss will increase to £140-160 million ($223-256 million) for the period, compared with £87 million a year earlier. EasyJet said the tough winter and strikes in France and Spain cost it more than £24 million. The market price for fuel has also risen by 32%. With its passengers checking fewer bags and consequently ancillary revenues falling, yields are also expected to fall slightly.
Lufthansa and its low-fare subsidiary Germanwings are deepening their cooperation. The two airlines will start interlining on Jan. 20. Germanwings will also become part of Lufthansa’s corporate sales program, Partner Plus. The two airlines started to move closer last year by launching their first code-sharing services and said that more initiatives will follow.
