He started his journalism career in 1992 as a freelance writer for Sueddeutsche Zeitung, Germany’s largest daily national newspaper and soon specialised in air transport. Jens joined Aviation Week and Aviation Daily in 2000 as one of the European correspondents. Later his role was expanded to cover international air transport. In 2013 he was named Managing Editor Commercial.
Jens frequently appears on radio and TV to comment on industry matters. In 2003, he received the Hugo Junkers Award of the German aviation press for his coverage of Fairchild Dornier’s bankruptcy. He was named the country’s top travel and air transport writer by the Travel Industry Club three times. Jens graduated from the Munich School of Journalism.
Europe’s large, mid-size and regional carriers are pursuing further structural changes as they look to bolster their finances in a turbulent market. Although traffic is rebounding, and earnings prospects are on the upswing for most, considerable headwind remains. Unions are one source of tension, as is the general economic malaise throughout Europe. Both threaten to depress air traffic recovery, thus setting the stage for further efforts to revamp businesses continent-wide.
The Supervisory Board of Austrian Airlines named Thierry Antinori as new CEO of the carrier (Aviation Daily, Dec.1). The 49-year old will start his new job on April 1, 2011. Antinori has so far been a member of the Executive Board at Lufthansa’s passenger airline division, where he was responsible for sales and marketing.
