He started his journalism career in 1992 as a freelance writer for Sueddeutsche Zeitung, Germany’s largest daily national newspaper and soon specialised in air transport. Jens joined Aviation Week and Aviation Daily in 2000 as one of the European correspondents. Later his role was expanded to cover international air transport. In 2013 he was named Managing Editor Commercial.

Jens frequently appears on radio and TV to comment on industry matters. In 2003, he received the Hugo Junkers Award of the German aviation press for his coverage of Fairchild Dornier’s bankruptcy. He was named the country’s top travel and air transport writer by the Travel Industry Club three times. Jens graduated from the Munich School of Journalism.

Air Berlin is starting a live experiment as the world’s first low-fare airline to enter a global alliance. Germany’s second largest carrier was invited officially to join Oneworld at a ceremony in Berlin last week. The process is expected to be completed by early 2012, but ahead of this the airline plans to introduce bilateral cooperation agreements with American Airlines, British Airways and Finnair.

European network airlines are starting to see improving financial performance and are witnessing a return of business to pre-crisis levels in some key areas. Airlines in Europe have been trailing other markets in putting the recent two-year decline in passengers and revenue behind them, but stronger-than-expected cargo operations and structural changes implemented by network carriers are starting to show results. However, the weak economic situation in Europe keeps carriers from celebrating prematurely.
