He started his journalism career in 1992 as a freelance writer for Sueddeutsche Zeitung, Germany’s largest daily national newspaper and soon specialised in air transport. Jens joined Aviation Week and Aviation Daily in 2000 as one of the European correspondents. Later his role was expanded to cover international air transport. In 2013 he was named Managing Editor Commercial.
Jens frequently appears on radio and TV to comment on industry matters. In 2003, he received the Hugo Junkers Award of the German aviation press for his coverage of Fairchild Dornier’s bankruptcy. He was named the country’s top travel and air transport writer by the Travel Industry Club three times. Jens graduated from the Munich School of Journalism.
CSA Czech Airlines is likely to see more significant cuts to its fleet, network and employee base after the Czech Finance Ministry outlined a three-year restructuring plan for the state-owned airline. The plan was approved of by the Czech Airlines board of directors last month and handed over to the finance ministry for consideration. CSA posted a loss of 3.6 billion crowns ($191 million) last year. The ministry said the airline should reduce those losses to about 600 million crowns this year.
The European Regions Airline Association (ERA) wants European Union Transport ministers to agree on a package of measures that will compensate them for revenue losses as a result of the recent closure of European airspace. ERA wants "coordinated and non-discriminatory compensation by member states" and "temporary relief from the payment of en route air traffic control charges to provide an immediate cash flow boost to many airlines." ERA warns that competition should not be distorted by the measures.
Etihad Airways will not achieve its goal of breaking even this year, CEO James Hogan conceded in an interview yesterday. "The global financial crisis and the pandemic hit us in yield, pushed us back down to 2007 levels,“ Hogan states. Etihad, the national carrier of Abu Dhabi, has never made a profit since it started flying in 2004. Given current demand levels, he predicted that Etihad will break even in 2011.
