He started his journalism career in 1992 as a freelance writer for Sueddeutsche Zeitung, Germany’s largest daily national newspaper and soon specialised in air transport. Jens joined Aviation Week and Aviation Daily in 2000 as one of the European correspondents. Later his role was expanded to cover international air transport. In 2013 he was named Managing Editor Commercial.
Jens frequently appears on radio and TV to comment on industry matters. In 2003, he received the Hugo Junkers Award of the German aviation press for his coverage of Fairchild Dornier’s bankruptcy. He was named the country’s top travel and air transport writer by the Travel Industry Club three times. Jens graduated from the Munich School of Journalism.
BMIbaby selected Julian Carr as its new managing director. He replaces Crawford Rix at the helm of the British low-fare airline. Carr previously worked for jet2.com, MyTravel Lite and IATA. His most recent job at BMIbaby was the role of commercial director. The future of BMIbaby has been cast in doubt, although new owner Lufthansa, which once considered a sharp refocusing of the BMI group, now appears to be continuing the low-fare business.
Germany’s air traffic controllers plan to go on strike next week. Controllers’ union GdF says it will announce details of the walkout only 24 hours in advance. The labor action will not affect the entire system, but will be limited to one or two airports. ATC provider Deutsche Flugsicherung (DFS) could still call for mediation. In that case, the strike would be called off for the mediation period but could be resumed if no solution is reached.
