He started his journalism career in 1992 as a freelance writer for Sueddeutsche Zeitung, Germany’s largest daily national newspaper and soon specialised in air transport. Jens joined Aviation Week and Aviation Daily in 2000 as one of the European correspondents. Later his role was expanded to cover international air transport. In 2013 he was named Managing Editor Commercial.
Jens frequently appears on radio and TV to comment on industry matters. In 2003, he received the Hugo Junkers Award of the German aviation press for his coverage of Fairchild Dornier’s bankruptcy. He was named the country’s top travel and air transport writer by the Travel Industry Club three times. Jens graduated from the Munich School of Journalism.
Lufthansa sent its share price steeply down with cautionary comments concerning expectations about its financial results. “Given the enduring uncertainties in the industry concerning demand and the oil price, the estimates of some analysts are high,” CFO Stephan Gemkow said at an investor conference. Lufthansa’s shares were down by as much as 9% on Friday but recovered part of that loss in afternoon trading.
SA Express is launching a domestic airline in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The carrier, called Congo Express, will start services on Feb. 1 and operate daily flights between Kinshasa and Lubumbashi, as well as four weekly roundtrips between Kinshasa and Mbuji Mayi, a diamond mining town. The carrier is 49% owned by SA Express, which is itself fully controlled by the South African government, and 51% is held by BizAfrika Congo, a local investment firm. SA Express will take over MRO services for Congo Express.
Airbus today began flight trials of its second A330-200 freighter, which is supporting the type certification effort due to conclude in March. The latest aircraft, powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 700s, flew for three hours in Toulouse, and joins the Pratt & Whitney PW4000-powered aircraft that first flew in November.
