He started his journalism career in 1992 as a freelance writer for Sueddeutsche Zeitung, Germany’s largest daily national newspaper and soon specialised in air transport. Jens joined Aviation Week and Aviation Daily in 2000 as one of the European correspondents. Later his role was expanded to cover international air transport. In 2013 he was named Managing Editor Commercial.
Jens frequently appears on radio and TV to comment on industry matters. In 2003, he received the Hugo Junkers Award of the German aviation press for his coverage of Fairchild Dornier’s bankruptcy. He was named the country’s top travel and air transport writer by the Travel Industry Club three times. Jens graduated from the Munich School of Journalism.
Austrian Airlines plans to cut EUR225 million from its cost base this year as a measure to improve and protect its liquidity. The airline will cut capacity by 10% compared with the 5% originally seen. It also asks its employees for temporary wages and a temporary freeze to pension plan contributions, among others. On Friday, Andreas Bierwirth and Peter Malanik took over from CEO Alfred Oetsch, who was forced to step down because of Austrian’s worsening performance.

Lufthansa is against the planned government support for Airbus delivery financing. “We want competition, but we want fair competition,” Lufthansa’s Senior Vice-President of Corporate Fleet, Nico Buchholz, told The DAILY. “This [plan] is annoying,” he said on the sidelines of the first Embraer 195 delivery to Lufthansa subsidiary Air Dolomiti in Sao José dos Campos/Brazil.
