He started his journalism career in 1992 as a freelance writer for Sueddeutsche Zeitung, Germany’s largest daily national newspaper and soon specialised in air transport. Jens joined Aviation Week and Aviation Daily in 2000 as one of the European correspondents. Later his role was expanded to cover international air transport. In 2013 he was named Managing Editor Commercial.
Jens frequently appears on radio and TV to comment on industry matters. In 2003, he received the Hugo Junkers Award of the German aviation press for his coverage of Fairchild Dornier’s bankruptcy. He was named the country’s top travel and air transport writer by the Travel Industry Club three times. Jens graduated from the Munich School of Journalism.
After signaling this week it would post a third-quarter operating loss, Air France-KLM has now put the negative result at about EUR200 million. Although financial observers speculate that this could presage a full-year operating loss, Air France-KLM insists it’s too early to draw that conclusion. “The objective is to generate a positive operating result,” management said, noting that the financial situation in the coming weeks — particularly in the troubled cargo sector — will determine the bottom line at the end of March.
Lufthansa cabin crew are expected to stage short-term, so-called “warning strikes” in the next few days to underline their demands for a 15% increase in wages. Cabin crew union UFO said it is preparing its members for industrial action after a third round of talks with Lufthansa management did not bring them closer to their goals. Cabin crew could walk off the job for longer periods as early as next week.
Finnair would be interested in merging with its Scandinavian rival, SAS, an official said this week. “That kind of merger would create a strong player in the European network. If the iniative comes from SAS, then we would be open to evaluating the proposal,” the official stated.
