He started his journalism career in 1992 as a freelance writer for Sueddeutsche Zeitung, Germany’s largest daily national newspaper and soon specialised in air transport. Jens joined Aviation Week and Aviation Daily in 2000 as one of the European correspondents. Later his role was expanded to cover international air transport. In 2013 he was named Managing Editor Commercial.
Jens frequently appears on radio and TV to comment on industry matters. In 2003, he received the Hugo Junkers Award of the German aviation press for his coverage of Fairchild Dornier’s bankruptcy. He was named the country’s top travel and air transport writer by the Travel Industry Club three times. Jens graduated from the Munich School of Journalism.
Ryanair is increasing its charges for checked baggage. The fee will go up from five to six pounds (about US$12), the airline said in a statement. The airport check-in fee, meanwhile, increased from two to three pounds (about US$6).
U.K. all-business-class airline Silverjet is considering a franchise operation in Dubai. The airline has been approached by several potential investors, CEO Lawrence Hunt revealed in an interview, and the new unit could serve routes from Dubai to India, South Africa or China, he said. Silverjet started operations in early 2007 and currently flies from London Luton to New York and Dubai.
Airbus plans to retain significant stakes in the factories it wants to sell this year. According to industry information, the manufacturer will hold on to a 40% stake each in its Varel and Nordenham sites, while parent EADS will keep 40% of the Augsburg plant. In France, Airbus will keep 30% of Saint Nazaire Ville and Meaulte.
