British Airways profits in the second quarter ended Sept. 30 dropped significantly from last year's period as the airline's cost-cutting efforts failed to keep pace with the continuing decline in average revenues. The Austrian Airlines Group posted a EUR19 million (US$21.7 million) pre-tax loss in the third quarter, underscoring how far the company still has to go in achieving a turnaround. Revenues dropped 10.1% to EUR1.5 billion (US$1.7 billion) in the period, but costs were down only 8.1%. Austrian's operating results were negative, too, at a loss of EUR7.5 million (US$8.5 million), compared to a profit of EUR61.8 million last year.
