He started his journalism career in 1992 as a freelance writer for Sueddeutsche Zeitung, Germany’s largest daily national newspaper and soon specialised in air transport. Jens joined Aviation Week and Aviation Daily in 2000 as one of the European correspondents. Later his role was expanded to cover international air transport. In 2013 he was named Managing Editor Commercial.
Jens frequently appears on radio and TV to comment on industry matters. In 2003, he received the Hugo Junkers Award of the German aviation press for his coverage of Fairchild Dornier’s bankruptcy. He was named the country’s top travel and air transport writer by the Travel Industry Club three times. Jens graduated from the Munich School of Journalism.
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is introducing a new operational safety audit geared toward small air carriers and less extensive than the IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA). The exercise—preliminarily called the Basic Safety Audit Program (BSAP)—is intended to provide a safety framework for small airlines that do not qualify for the more extensive IOSA process.
Airbus sees “huge growth potential” for more long-haul operations by Latin American airlines, the manufacturer’s Executive Vice President-Latin America and Caribbean Rafael Alonso said on the sidelines of the Latin American and Caribbean Air Transport Association Leaders Forum in Cancun, Mexico. The company also expects that growth in air travel inside the region will be even faster. The six biggest airlines in the region only carry 19% of the long-haul traffic into and out of Latin America, Alonso pointed out.
