Is 3-D display coming? A breakthrough in radar display may be in the offing, with a new 3-D radar developed by Avco Corp. Civil applications include air traffic control (where 3-D display fits nicely into the FAA's urge to get 3-D aircraft information for controllers), and severe weather forecasting — tornadoes, thunderstorms and hurricanes. The device uses a rotating electro-luminescent panel. Rotation speed is chosen to avoid flicker, with the result that radar blip appears to be floating in space.
Look for increasing production of larger fixed-wing airplanes for business and utility into 1963, following last year's trend when 70% of the 6,778 airplanes produced were larger than three-place and 14% were twins. Most active general aviation aircraft throughout the Western world will continue to be American made. The big four manufacturers exported 1,581 aircraft worth $29.5 million during 1961, nearly $9 million more than their yearly average for the past five years.
AC Aviation, Inc., Janesville, Wisc., has hired Dan Morrison as director of Charter Sales and Andy Schweickert as director of Marketing. Margaret Clark has been promoted to Charter manager. Aerion, Reno, Nev., named Doug Nichols chief operating officer responsible for all operating, financial, business development and marketing activities related to the development of the supersonic business jet (SBJ). He succeeds Michael Henderson, who following his tenure as COO remains Aerion's principal scientist and a director of the company.
