Summary

Joe Anselmo has been Editorial Director of the Aviation Week Network and Editor-in-Chief of Aviation Week & Space Technology since 2013. Based in Washington, D.C., he directs a team of more than two dozen aerospace journalists across the U.S., Europe and Asia-Pacific.

Under his leadership, Aviation Week has won numerous accolades for its in-depth reporting and deep dives into aerospace technology, including the 2017 Grand Neal award for “Top Brand/Overall Editorial Excellence,” business-to-business journalism’s equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize. Writers from the Aviation Week Network also took home six honors at the 2018 Aerospace Media Awards in London.

In 2015, Anselmo and his team spearheaded a digital initiative that provides subscribers with fresh content every day via mobile phones, tablets, or desktop computers. To mark Aviation Week’s 100th anniversary in 2016, the publication’s entire archive – more than 440,000 pages of articles, images, covers and advertisements – was digitized into a searchable online archive. Aviation Week also has accelerated its push into digital media with regular podcasts, videos, data features, infographics and eBooks.

Anselmo has more than 25 years of experience as an editor and reporter with Aviation Week, Congressional Quarterly and the Washington Post Company. He has won three Aerospace Journalist of the Year awards. A graduate of Ohio University, he was elected three times to the National Press Club’s Board of Governors, including one term as board chairman.

While much attention is focused on Lockheed Martin's challenge to Hughes, Space Systems/Loral is quietly positioning itself for the future by strengthening ties with overseas business partners and developing a high-capacity 20-kw satellite. As Space Systems/Loral President Robert E. Berry sees it, Lockheed Martin is playing catch-up in its construction of a new ``satellite factory of the future'' 15 min. down California Highway 101. ``We built our `satellite factory of the future' in 1992,'' he says.

Over the last five years, technological advances have enabled satellites to play an increasing role in meeting the ever-rising demand for telecommunications services around the world. Commercial satellite communications, once thought to be a nearly mature market, is growing at a clip of 10% a year. Leading manufacturers are positioning themselves for the future by branching into new areas, such as direct broadcast satellites and high-speed transmission of data. They're working to push power levels up and delivery times down to unheard of levels.

A THAAD anti-missile interceptor came close to hitting its target, but ultimately flew past it after an apparent malfunction in the seeker's electronics. The test marked the third time in three tries that the U.S. Army/Lockheed Martin/Raytheon THAAD (Theater High-Altitude Area Defense) system failed to intercept a simulated ballistic missile target. The interceptor self-destructed after flying past the target during the July 15 test at White Sands Missile Range, N.M. All of the debris landed within the range.
