Sheltair Aviation, which operates a national network of fixed-base operations, plans to open its second FBO location in Georgia at Gwinnett County Airport (LZU) northeast of Atlanta.
The opening is scheduled for April 2, 2023.
Sheltair’s selection by the airport was based upon a $17 million investment program the company had proposed to improve and expand upon the existing facilities, it says. Part of the improvement effort involves expanding hangar and office spaces under a 40-year lease on the property. Currently, existing FBO facilities are operated by Gwinnett Aero, which will transition to Sheltair in April.
“The Airport Authority and Gwinnett County have expressed their goals to improve the level of service and aesthetics of the properties at the airport, and we heard them loud and clear,” says Milo Zonka, Sheltair vice president of real estate. “This is an important move for Sheltair into the Atlanta metro area, and a large investment commitment to redevelop the significant facilities already onsite—almost 220,000 ft.² of hangars—and design and construction of a new FBO and restaurant/office facility will commence shortly.”
According to Sheltair’s proposal, the Gwinnett airport is underused in its marketing strategy. To combat this, the company plans on marketing the airport as a business aviation destination thanks to the county’s increasing bioscience, technology and manufacturing industries.
Additionally, the location will be an Avfuel-branded FBO, offering customers rewards with AVTRIP points and Avfuel Contract Fuel pricing.
Gwinnett County Airport is the third busiest in the state of Georgia with 119,00 reported takeoffs and landings in 2022. “We’re really excited,” says Matthew Smith, the county’s airport director. “We think this will give us a gateway to the community, which is what we should be and what we hope we will be.”
