Russia’s Interstate Aviation Committee (IAC) granted approval for ATR 42/72 aircraft to operate at Russian airports with non-tarmac runways. Of the 332 airports and airdromes in Russia, 38% have non-tarmac runways. UTair (UT) has 14 ATR 42s and its subsidiary, UTair-Ukraine (QU), has three ATR 72-200s and 14 -500s. NordStar (Y7) has five ATR 42s. According to UT`s website, it has 14 ATR 42s, three ATR 72-200s and 14 -500s, but only ATR 42s fleet fly both at UT and UT-Ukraine, UT-Ukraine doesn`t operate with 72s.

Aeroports de Paris (ADP) posted a €348 million ($458.4 million) net profit for 2011, up 15.1% over 2010, though the year-over-year increase was mostly due to nonrecurring items. Airports are full of talk of clouds these days, but not the clouds dotting the skies. More airports are contracting out some or all of their information technology (IT) functions, particularly data collection, to cloud service providers. Turkish Airlines launched 2X-weekly Istanbul Ataturk – Khartoum – Mogadishu service March 5, beginning the first service to the Somali capital by any European airline. The route will be operated by a Boeing 737-800. FlyDubai will launch 4X-weekly service between Dubai and Sanaa April 22. United Airlines will launch daily nonstop service between San Francisco and Washington National May 14. Westbound service from National to San Francisco will begin May 15.
SuperJet International’s (SJI) training center in Venice has received Italian Civil Aviation Authority certification to provide Airbus A320 family aircraft training on a full flight simulator (FFS). The FFS was transferred in November from the Alitalia training center in Rome to the SJI training center. SJI is a joint venture between Finmeccanica company Alenia Aermacchi and Sukhoi Holding. The A320 FFS allows SJI to extend services beyond Sukhoi Superjet 100 training provided on an SSJ100 FFS at the SJI training center in Zhukovsky, Moscow.
Chilean airlines saw a 16% increase in international passenger traffic and a 15.8% growth in domestic traffic in January, logging a record figure of 1.4 million boarding passengers, its all-time best single month on record.
Qantas (QF) on Wednesday launched inflight connectivity trials onboard six Airbus A380 aircraft flying to Los Angeles from Sydney and Melbourne. The OnAir connectivity service, using Inmarsat’s SwiftBroadband, will initially be available to customers in the first- and business-class cabins.
Cyprus Airways posted a post-tax loss of €18.9 million ($25 million) for the 2011 full year, compared to a €232,000 profit in 2010. The carrier said the economic downturn, Greek debt crisis, competition and dip in passenger traffic all contributed to the loss. Total revenue for the year was €212.4 million compared to the previous year’s €236.3 million.

Air Transport Services Group (ATSG), the Wilmington, Ohio-based air cargo operator, reported 2011 net income of $23.2 million, down 41.7% from a $39.8 million net profit in 2010. The company said earnings were partly affected by training and transitioning costs for pilots as it upgrades its fleet. Aircraft added during 2011 included nine Boeing 767 converted freighters and one 757F. Additions in 2012 are slated to include seven more 767Fs and two 757 combi aircraft. ATSG is in the process of retiring its remaining 727 and DC-8 freighters.
The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is transitioning to a risk-based, intelligence-driven screening system that moves away from the one-size-fits-all approach the agency adopted when it was first created, the TSA chief said Monday.
