Air Berlin (AB) has received the green light to join the oneworld alliance March 20 after completing a review by British Airways (BA), which is sponsoring its entry.

Silver Airways will relocate its maintenance department from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., to a new 61,000 sq. ft. facility at Gainesville Regional Airport. The airline was launched in May 2011 following the acquisition of select assets from former Gulfstream International Airlines. It operates more than 100 daily scheduled flights to/from 29 gateways in Florida, The Bahamas, Montana, Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
Moscow-based VIM Avia (NN) reported 11.8% passenger traffic growth in 2011, with 1.2 million passengers carried. NN’s scheduled flights grew to 79% in 2011 from 51% in 2010, due to the opening of domestic and CIS routes, including Siberia, Russian Far East, Armenia, Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan. NN flies to 27 destinations in Russia, CIS and some European countries including Spain, Greece, Italy and Switzerland, as well as charter flights to leisure destinations. Its fleet comprises 11 Boeing 757-200s.
Air Seychelles (HM) has appointed Cramer Ball as CEO, effective Feb. 1. Ball was formerly Etihad Airways (EY) regional general manager of Asia Pacific South and Australasia. The move follows the strategic partnership between EY and the Seychelles government in which EY will acquire a 40% stake in HM ( ATW Daily News, Jan. 30). Former EY regional finance manager-Asia Pacific Shelley Cole has been named CFO.
The Chinese government has raised domestic jet fuel prices to CNY7,465 ($1,186) per ton, up 1.43% from CNY7,360 per ton in January, dealing another blow to Chinese carriers that have already suffered from a decline in domestic market demand and air fares following the Chinese Spring Festival.

The number of European airports that are "carbon accredited" continues to increase and stood at 47 by mid January following the entry of Warsaw Chopin (WAW) in December and Dusseldorf (DUS) and Finnish airports operator Finavia in January. Finavia brought seven airports into the program. The covered airports account for 49% of European passenger traffic.
South Russian airports—Sochi (AER), Anapa (AAQ), Gelendzhik (GDZ), Krasnodar (KRR) and Yeisk—reported passenger traffic of 5.4 million in 2011, up 24% over 2010. Passengers carried on domestic routes reached 4.6 million, up 22%. The airports served 772,000 international passengers, up 31% year-over-year.
Moscow Sheremetyevo (SVO) served 22.6 million passengers in 2011, 16.7% more than 2010. Traffic on international routes increased 18.1% and reached 14.5 million. Traffic on domestic routes was 8 million, up 14.3% over 2010. Russian carriers with the highest growth at the airport were Aeroflot, Transaero, Nord Wind, Air France and Turkish Airlines. The most popular foreign destinations were Antalya, Paris, Istanbul, Prague and Beijing. The highest demand was on the St. Petersburg, Sochi, Krasnodar and Yekaterinburg routes.
Panama City Tocumen (PTY) recently completed construction of its North Pier, a 21,000 sq. m. passenger terminal, which is expected be fully operational by April. The North Pier will increase the airport’s capacity from 6 to 9 million passengers per year. State-owned management company Tocumen said Colombia-based consortium Aerotocumen built the $100 million North Pier, which includes 12 gates, up to 27 new spaces for concessions, ramp and taxi-way upgrades, as well as a new access to the cargo terminal.
The UK government needs to commit to a long-term aviation policy that focuses on consumers and allows airport capacity to develop, specifically in southeast England, the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said in a report released last month. It warned that without such a policy there is a risk that fares would go up, route choice would drop and the UK economy would suffer.
Seoul Incheon (ICN) is discounting landing fees in an aggressive marketing campaign aimed at attracting new airlines to South Korea’s main international airport. ICN is offering a 100% discount on landing fees for new carriers in their first year of operation at the airport, followed by 75% off in the second year and a 50% reduction in year three.
UK airports operator BAA lost its appeal Feb. 1 of a 2009 ruling by the UK Competition Commission (CC) that had the effect of directing it to sell London Stansted (STN). “It is now surely time for BAA to accept our findings and proceed with the necessary divestments,” said Laura Carstensen, who chairs the CC's BAA Remedies Implementation Group.
