Emirates and Lufthansa Technik AG have signed a five-year nonexclusive agreement related to the maintenance of components on A330/A340 and 777 fleets operated by the airline. Emirates’ EVP Engineering and Operations Adel Al Redha said the deal is an extension of the existing landing gear services provided by Lufthansa Technik as a foundation for new opportunities.

Thai Airlines selected International Aero Engines to power the V2500 engine for the Airbus A320s used by its subsidiary Thai Smile, in a deal valued at $230 million. First deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2012. The deal includes a comprehensive fleet hour maintenance agreement and support program. Thai operates nine V2500-powered A320s.

International Aero Engines (IAE) is evaluating a new addition to its successful V2500 Select engine series, with the V2500 SelectThree. The SelectThree series is currently “on the drawing board,” IAE said, adding that the engine will focus on reducing maintenance costs and developing technology, which can be retrofit across the entire fleet.

Alaska Airlines will launch daily Honolulu service to Oakland and San Jose April 10. Continental Airlines will launch daily Washington Dulles-Manchester service May 2012 and daily Washington Dulles-Dublin service June 2012, subject to government approval. It will also add weekly Los Angeles-Durango service March 2012, subject to government approval. FlyDubai will launch 2X-weekly Dubai-Tbilisi service Nov. 4.

The Unite union has called for the conciliation service ACAS to intervene in the dispute between Thomas Cook Airlines (UK) and its cabin crew. Management and Unite held a second round of talks Wednesday over the terms of planned cabin redundancies. The leisure carrier intends to cut 498 cabin crew jobs ( ATW Daily News, Oct. 26).

Low-cost carrier Jetstar on Wednesday became the first airline to hand out iPads to its passengers for inflight entertainment. The iPads were launched on selected Jetstar flights last week and will be rolled out across the Australian domestic, transtasman and short-haul international services from Australia and New Zealand, in the coming weeks.
