London Gatwick Airport (LGW) has proposed a second runway for the airport as being a more cost-effective and speedier solution to the southeast’s capacity problems instead of a third runway at London Heathrow Airport.

Dallas-based Southwest Airlines has reported a second-quarter net income of $224 million, down 1.8% from a net income of $228 million in the year-ago quarter.

United Airlines parent United Continental Holdings (UCH) earned net income of $469 million in the second quarter, up 38.3% over a net profit of $339 million in the prior-year period.

Singapore Airlines Group (SIA) posted a net profit of S$121 million ($95.6 million) for its fiscal first quarter ended June 30, up 56.2% over net income of S$78 million in the prior-year quarter.

EasyGroup Holdings, the private investment vehicle of EasyJet founder Stelios Haji-Ioannou, has elected to take newly issued Fastjet shares in lieu of all royalty and consultancy payments due to EasyGroup up to Dec. 31.

Malaysia Airlines has taken delivery of its first of 36 ATR 72-600 for regional subsidiary MASwings as part of an order inked in December 2012.

Grupo Aeroméxico posted a second-quarter net income of MXP$322 million ($25.7 million), more than doubling its year-ago net income of MXP$153 million.

Boeing remains “highly confident” in the 787 in the aftermath of the July 12 Ethiopian Airlines Dreamliner fire at London Heathrow Airport, according to the company’s CEO.

US Airways earned net income of $287 million in the second quarter, which it expects to be its last full reporting period as an independent company.

Boeing reported a second-quarter net profit of $1.09 billion, up 12.5% over net income of $967 million in the June 2012 quarter, boosted by a 15% year-over-year revenue improvement in its Commercial Airplanes unit.

Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines reported second-quarter net income of $685 million, reversed from a net loss of $168 million in the year-ago quarter.

Florida-based Spirit Airlines earned a second-quarter net profit of $42.1 million, up 21.6% compared to a net income of $23.4 million in the year-ago period.

Hawaiian Holdings, parent of Hawaiian Airlines, reported a second-quarter net income of $11.3 million, nearly tripling the $3.9 million net profit in the year-ago quarter.
