Operators using Dubai International Airport will face an 80-day runway closure next year that looks set to bring major upheaval. The airport operator has asked airlines to reduce operations or move them to World Central/Al Maktoum International Airport. Freight, general aviation and charter carriers will be barred from the airport during the closure period, set to start on May 1, 2014. Runway 12L/30R is nearing the end of its design life.

Ireland's Shannon Airport's pre-clearance — the process: Upon arrival at Shannon, all passengers and flight crew deplane (except one pilot) and all baggage is taken off the aircraft. They are driven to the CBP area in less than a minute and fast-tracked through the dedicated VIP CPB pre-clearance facility. They are not mixed with any other passengers at this very private facility and up to 20 passengers can be cleared from one aircraft. Once everyone else is cleared, the remaining crewmember will go into the building to be pre-cleared.

ARINC Direct this summer is planning to begin delivery of its new Xplore device, a portable unit that is designed to bring ACARS services typically found only on large business jets and airliners to a range of aircraft. The Xplore unit combines four capabilities in a portable box — ACARS messaging services, SMS and instant messaging, voice services and BlackBerry email. The device can be attached by Velcro or thumb screws to a panel mount. Incorporating Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, Xplore can provide access to ARINC's ACARS services.

Bombardier is confident in the strong, long-term potential of the business aircraft industry and forecasts a total of 24,000 business jet deliveries from 2013 to 2032 in the segments in which Bombardier competes, which represents approximately $650 billion in industry revenues. Bombardier's Business Aircraft Market Forecast anticipates 9,800 aircraft deliveries, worth $269 billion, during the 2013 to 2022 period, and 14,200 aircraft, worth $381 billion, from 2023 to 2032.

SyberJet says it plans to return the SJ30 light jet to production within two years and has selected Cedar City, Utah, as its headquarters and assembly plant location. MT LLC, which acquired the program from bankruptcy in April 2011, renamed the operation SyberJet. State and local officials offered MT a $43 million package to locate in Cedar City, as well as expand the facilities of SyberJet's sister company, Metalcraft Technologies, which is also based there. In the works under various owners since 1986, the Ed Swearingen-designed jet was finally certified in 2004.

Unhappily surprised by FAA's notice that it planned to bill for extra controller staffing at its annual summer fly-in in Oshkosh, Wis., the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) and its members lobbied Congress hard to block the charge. However, facing a spectrum of unpalatable options, under protest EAA finalized a one-time agreement to cover nearly $450,000 in expenses related to ATC services at the event. “Let me be clear: We have consistently regarded the FAA's move as holding AirVenture and GA hostage this year,” said EAA Chairman Jack Pelton.

Aircell announced that it has signed an agreement with P3 Voith Aerospace GmbH, Hamburg, Germany, to develop several new Supplemental Type Certificates (STCs) for the Aviator 200 inflight connectivity system in the European market. Under the program, Aircell will provide complete, no-cost STCs to operators installing an Aviator 200 system at an authorized Aircell dealer and activating a new SwiftBroadband service plan with Aircell. Gestair private Aviation, which has 10 FBOs in Spain, reports an investment of about EUR1.2 million to refurbish the old “Authorities Pavilion” at Madrid-Barajas and convert it into a modern FBO. The facility is 472 sq. meters (nearly 5,100 sq. ft.) including three VIP rooms for passengers and a fourth for crew, a passenger services office, a flight-planning area and a staff of 33. Beechcraft has delivered its 4,000th Model 36 Bonanza, pushing the entire fleet of Model 33, 35 and 36 Bonanzas to more than 18,000 aircraft. The 4,000th Model 36, a G36, was delivered to Segall Group, a retail brokerage firm based in Baltimore, Md. The company plans to use the six-seat piston single for site visits and client meetings for its real-estate deals in the mid-Atlantic region. The Bonanza line in Wichita, Kan., is the longest running in continuous production of any aircraft, spanning 66 years.

A year after Jet Aviation's completions woes had “blemished” an otherwise strong financial performance at parent company General Dynamics, Jet Aviation President Dan Clare says the business has put new systems and processes in place and that customers have been happy with the results.
