Kollsman's All Weather Window incorporates a specially designed sensor and electronics processor that provides a video image that will interface with raster-capable head-up displays. The system is designed to detect and display the high-intensity light emissions of runway systems without ``blooming'' the lights or washing out the airport scenery. A CAT I-equipped aircraft with the All Weather Window will have the ability to land at an approved airport when encountering visibility that is below minimums.

Reeve Aleutian Airways, Alaska's oldest regional airline, suspended scheduled service and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in early December 2000. Company president Richard (Dick) Reeve says he considers the action a ``last resort'' in an effort to keep the legendary Anchorage-based carrier flying, though plans are to continue charter flights.
Fractional operator Flight Options has selected CAMP Systems International's AviSource to provide maintenance management, inventory control and flight scheduling for the company's entire fleet. Cleveland-based Flight Options sells shares in preowned aircraft including Cessna Citation IIs and IIIs, Beechjets, Hawkers, Falcon 50s, Challenger 601s and Gulfstream IVs.

In an attempt to manage delays at La Guardia Airport, the FAA conducted an early-December 2000 lottery among airlines wishing to add flights at the congested New York City facility. AIR-21 legislation, passed by Congress last spring, would have authorized an unlimited number of additional flights between La Guardia and smaller cities on aircraft seating fewer than 71 passengers. Alarmed at the possible gridlock that would ensue, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey -- operator of La Guardia -- slapped a moratorium on new flights in September 2000.

Honeywell President Michael A. Smith has been elected chairman of GAMA. Smith, a four-year GAMA board member, will serve a one-year term. Replacing Smith as vice-chair is NORDAM Group Chairman and CEO Ray H. Siegfried, a GAMA board member since 1994 and former chairman of the association's International Affairs Committee.
Bombardier Aerospace has mated the wing and fuselage of the first Continental business jet, now nearing completion at the company's Wichita plant. John Holding, Bombardier's executive vice president for engineering, said the program ``continues to proceed as planned, and this first aircraft is on target to fly before the middle of [this year].'' Certification of the twinjet is slated for the fall 2002, with delivery of the first ``green'' aircraft following before the end of the year.

The October 2000 crash of a Bombardier Challenger 604 has claimed a third victim. Experimental test pilot Eric Fiore died of his injuries in a Wichita hospital in mid-November. Fiore had sustained burns over 80 percent of his body in the crash. Also killed were test pilot Bryan Irelan and flight test engineer David Riggs. The NTSB has issued a series of recommendations following its investigation into the cause of a Learjet 35 accident killing golfer Payne Stewart and five others. While unable to ascertain precisely why the aircraft experienced pressurization difficulties, the Safety Board did recommend renewed emphasis on the causes, effects and solutions to hypoxia.
The AOPA funded a cable television ad campaign to extol the virtues of community airports and general aviation. The commercials aired on The Weather Channel between December 22 and January 3.
Air Technical Industries has developed a scissor lift and tilt table with a long-side-up tilt. The unit is designed for tilting long items from horizontal to vertical positions or placing them on a pallet for shipping. The lift is electrohydraulically operated by a 110-volt single-phase or 220/440-volt three-phase source, and is available with pneumatically operated controls. Capacities available range from 2,000 to 10,000 pounds with table sizes ranging from 32 by 48 inches up to 72 by 96 inches.
Former National Air and Space Museum Director Walter Boyne has been named ``Aerospace Expert-in-Residence'' at the Discovery Wings Channel. A 5,000-hour pilot, Boyne also founded Air&Space magazine, serves as associate editor of Wings and Airpower magazines and edits the Walter J. Boyne Military Aircraft series for McGraw-Hill.
