PPG Industries is combining its aircraft transparency and aerospace coatings and sealants businesses to form a new unit, aerospace products. Sino Swearingen Aircraft Company last week formally unveiled the first conforming prototype of the entry-level SJ30-2 in ceremonies before more than 700 attendees at its San Antonio, Texas headquarters. The event came more than a decade after the original SJ30 was first conceived and was described by company officials as "truly making history."
CABOT AVIATION was appointed the exclusive agent to sell a B747SP in an executive configuration with 92 first-class seats, lounge and upper deck bedroom. The aircraft, delivered new to TWA in 1980 and subsequently operated by American Airlines, was converted into an executive configuration in 1994.
GULFSTREAM AEROSPACE named Curtis VanNice vice president of completions sales and design and said he will oversee sales of completions and interior design of aircraft at Gulfstream's five completion centers: Savannah, Ga.; Long Beach, Calif.; Brunswick, Ga.; Appleton, Wis. and Dallas, Texas. He will report to Jim Holcombe, senior vice president-marketing. VanNice began his career with Executive Aircraft Service in Dallas and then spent 22 years with KC Aviation in Dallas before that company was acquired by Gulfstream in 1998.
CHARLES AUFRANC joined Bizjet SA in Geneva, Switzerland as manager of technical sales support. Aufranc has more than 30 years of corporate aviation experience, serving as product support manager with Piper Aircraft and quality assurance manager at Jet Aviation's Geneva facility.
Lufthansa Technik (LHT) received an order from a Mideast head of state to acquire, complete and deliver a VIP Boeing 747-400, a contract valued at $300 million. LHT called the contract "a first-of-its-kind all-inclusive program" that covers aircraft procurement, writing of system specifications, supervision of manufacturing and overseeing of modifications and completion. LHT also will conduct flight tests and prepare the operational home base for the 747.
FAA received kudos last week from air traffic controllers for consulting them early in the process of adding new technologies. Bill Blackmer, director of safety and technology for the National Air Traffic Controllers Association and technical liaison with FAA, said the agency took steps to involve employees "to ensure that the final product is what they need." This helped with controller acceptance, training and transition to the new systems, Blackmer said.

CPI AEROSTRUCTURES, INC. won $3.1 million in new contracts during the second quarter, including a $1.2 million increase to the purchase order to produce engine mounts for the Model 60 Learjet and Galaxy Aerospace Astra business jets. CPI also named Timothy J. Stone president of the company's machining facility in Ithaca, N.Y. He will replace Dan Liguori, who will serve as a consultant through October. "Tim brings with him a vast amount of experience, including being the operations manager for a machining company with revenue in excess of $100 million.
SENATE COMMERCE COMMITTEE Thursday cleared the nomination of Dallas trial attorney Debbie Branson for a seat on the FAA Management Advisory Council. The committee, however, did not bring up the nomination of AOPA President Phil Boyer for a seat on the same panel (BA, July 3/7). Boyer's opposition to new user fees on corporate and general aviation has drawn the wrath of committee Chairman John McCain (R-Ariz.) and chances of his nomination moving forward appear bleak.
series airplanes (Docket No. 2000-CE-20-AD; Amdt. 39-11817; AD 2000-14-08) - requires operators of New Piper PA-42 series airplanes equipped with pneumatic deicing boots to revise the Airplane Flight Manual to include requirements for activation of the airframe pneumatic deicing boots. This AD is the result of reports of in-flight incidents and an accident (on airplanes other than the affected Piper airplanes) that occurred in icing conditions when the airframe pneumatic deicing boots were not activated.
The pilot of a Cessna 402 on a mail flight between San Juan, Puerto Rico and St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands was killed this month after the aircraft made an abrupt descent and crashed into the Caribbean Sea.
RICK KENT was promoted to customer service manager at Elliott Aviation's Moline, Ill. facility. Kent joined Elliott in 1986 as an aviation fuel technician. In his new position, he will manage aircraft arrivals and departures, customer support services, fuel storage and quality control, security, facility and equipment maintenance and snow removal.
JOSEPH S. MURPHY, 85, who founded Air Transport World magazine and spent decades in the aviation publishing industry, died July 13 in Guam due to complications from cancer. Murphy, a native of New York City, joined American Airlines at LaGuardia Airport in 1943 and was quickly named editor of the company's maintenance and fleet service manuals. In 1952 he moved to Washington, D.C. to accept a position with American Aviation Publications, which was founded and headed by Wayne Parrish, a dominant force in aviation publishing at the time.
Model Astra SPX and 1125 Westwind Astra series airplanes (Docket No. 2000-NM-10-AD) - proposed to require a one-time inspection of the position of the aileron autopilot servo and attachment arm; follow-on actions; and corrective actions, if necessary; and installation of a stopper angle on the servo bracket. This action is necessary to prevent the control link of the aileron autopilot servo from being driven overcenter, which could result in roll oscillations when the autopilot is engaged. This action is intended to address the identified unsafe condition.
AE 3007A and AE 3007C series turbofan engines (Docket No. 99-NE-15-AD; Amdt. 39-11800; AD 2000-13-01) - requires the removal from service of certain turbine wheels before exceeding new, reduced cyclic life limits. This amendment is prompted by a refined life analysis that was performed by the manufacturer. The actions specified by this AD are intended to prevent an uncontained turbine wheel failure, which could result in damage to the airplane. FAA estimates that 260 engines installed on U.S.-registered aircraft will be affected.
Jet Aviation said it had the most successful year in the company's 33-year history in 1999. The company said it had net sales of $449.9 million, up 23 percent over the previous year "while achieving record profits."
