SCOTT TECHNOLOGIES, Cleveland, Ohio, announced the resignation of William J. Sickman, 46, who had been vice president of corporate relations. Scott said Sickman, who had been with the company since 1988, resigned "to pursue his interests in working in a larger corporate setting." Scott Technologies designs and builds high-performance respiratory systems and other life saving products for aerospace, aviation, defense, firefighting, government and industrial markets.
In an emergency action this month, the Federal Aviation Administration ordered operators to immediately remove unapproved combustor liner assemblies from General Electric CJ610 turbojet and CF700 turbofan engines.
FLIGHT DYNAMICS, Portland, Ore., said it exceeded the 1,000 mark in orders for its Head-Up Guidance System (HGS) with a recent order from Southwest Airlines. Since the initial order in 1987 for an HGS system on Boeing 727-200s operated by Alaska Airlines, Flight Dynamics said 14 airlines, 30 corporate operators, four military transport agencies, three flight training companies and NASA have placed orders.
CURTISS-WRIGHT CORP., Lyndhurst, N.J., extended its agreement with British Aerospace Airbus for providing controlled shot-peen forming and other metal treating services for wing panels and other wing structures. The extension provides that BAe will buy from C-W's subsidiary, Metal Improvement Co., all of its requirements for such services for all Airbus aircraft for 10 years. To meet the demand, C-W will build a new 170,000-square-foot building on land provided by BAe.

BOMBARDIER AEROSPACE sold 12 Canadair Regional Jet Series 200 aircraft to Kendell Airlines of Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, Australia last month and the Australian carrier also took options on 12 additional aircraft. Kendell is an alliance partner of Ansett Australian and a wholly owned subsidiary of Ansett Holdings, Ltd. Deliveries of the firm orders are to begin in the last quarter of 1999 and be completed by mid-2001. The Kendell order pushed the firm orderbook for the CRJ to more than 500 airplanes.
A FORMER SENATE STAFFER on the Environment and Public Works Committee, Claudia A. McMurray, joined Van Scoyoc Associates, Inc., a Washington, D.C.-based government relations firm. McMurray served in Senate staff posts for eight years, including working for the Senate Environment Committee for five years and as counsel to Sens. Fred Thompson (R-Tenn.) and John Warner (R-Va.). As a vice president with Van Scoyoc Associates, McMurray will focus on domestic and international environmental, natural resource, energy and infrastructure issues.
The Federal Aviation Administration has reopened the comment period on a notice of proposed rulemaking that would require the owners of thousands of Cessna twin-engine models to replace fuel and oil hoses in their aircraft, a proposal that could cost more than $26 million to accomplish.
JEPPESEN, the Denver, Colo. aviation services company, received a multi-year contract from Aviation Methods, Inc. to provide flight planning, aviation weather, instrument charts and international trip planning services for AMI's aircraft fleet. AMI, a TAG Aviation Holding subsidiary, which will be renamed Tag Aviation U.S. at yearend (BA Oct. 26/191), manages a fleet of more than 60 aircraft worldwide.
RAYTHEON AIRCRAFT'S new Premier I business jet, which rolled out in August (BA, Aug. 24/83), should make its first flight "any day now," according to a company official. The aircraft is in flight test and going through a final checklist of steps necessary before clearance for flight.
FOKKER Model F27 Mark 050, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600 and 700 Rough Field Version series airplanes (Docket No. 98-NM-92-AD; Amdt. 39-10810; AD 98-21-02) - supersedes an existing AD (93-22-02) that requires inspection of the main landing gear (MLG) legs to determine if parts are missing or damaged and modification, if necessary. The AD also requires periodic measurements of the extension of each MLG shock absorber sliding member and specifies a certain modification that can be an optional terminating action for the measurements.
EXECUTIVE BEECHCRAFT, based at Kansas City's Downtown Airport, won FAA supplemental type certificate approval to install Collins traffic alert and collision avoidance systems (TCAS II) in King Air 200s.
The Federal Aviation Administration is seeking comments on a proposed technical standard order that would establish minimum performance standards for terrain awareness and warning systems (TAWS). The TSO follows FAA's proposal in August to prohibit operation of turbine-powered aircraft with six or more seats unless they are equipped with an FAA-approved TAWS. The proposal would cover at least 12,300 turbine aircraft operated under Parts 91 and 135 (BA, Aug. 31/91).
CESSNA AIRCRAFT, which delivered its first Caravan utility single-turborprop in early 1985, last month handed over the 1,000th Caravan to Tropic Air for passenger service in Belize and Guatemala. Cessna, which offers four models of the Caravan including an amphibian and a "Cargomaster" version, has delivered more than 250 Caravans to Federal Express. The company said international customers, however, account for 60 percent of Caravan shipments, operating the aircraft in 65 countries.
THE NATIONAL BUSINESS AVIATION ASSOCIATION is hosting a seminar this week in Zhuhai, China that officials hope will open a dialogue between U.S. and Chinese aviation officials over global expansion. The Nov. 17 event, the first of its kind to be organized by NBAA, is being held in conjunction with Airshow China and will include senior NBAA officials in addition to representatives from several leading manufacturers, FAA and the Chinese aviation authority.
ALLIEDSIGNAL AEROSPACE COMPANY has developed a TFE731-3C engine upgrade for Learjet 55 aircraft. The upgrade, which can be completed during a major periodic inspection (MPI) or core zone inspection, will allow MPI intervals to be extended to 2,100 hours. The upgrade also will increase inter-turbine temperature limits by 25 degrees centigrade in climb and 20 degrees centigrade in cruise.
One of the few new commercial airports to open in the past quarter-century, the Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport (XNA), opened Nov. 6 and American Eagle began providing ERJ-145 flights to Chicago's O'Hare Airport. The new airport, which has an 8,800-foot runway, is just the third new "greenfield" commercial airport to open since Dallas/Fort Worth International in 1974. The other two are Fort Myers, Fla., and the massive Denver International.
ALTHOUGH A RECOUNT of absentee ballots narrowed the margin of victory, Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) was declared the winner of the Senate race in Nevada (BA, Nov. 9/209). Reid, a member of the Senate transportation appropriations subcommittee, was re-elected to his seat over former Rep. John Ensign (R-Nev.) by 401 votes. Washoe County, Nev. recounted its absentee ballots, but the tally was held up by a computer glitch. Ensign has until Dec. 2 to request a statewide recount.
MAREK DARECKI was named general manager of Menasco Krosno, the Krosno, Poland-based landing gear operation of Coltec Industries. Darecki formerly was the aviation division director of WSK PZL-Reszow.
PRATT&WHITNEY CANADA PW530A series turbofan engines (Docket No. 98-ANE-58-AD; Amdt. 39-10817; AD 98-17-10) - publishes an AD previously sent to all known U.S. owners and operators of the affected engines, which power Cessna Citation Model 550 Bravo aircraft. The AD requires engine surge events in the aircraft maintenance records. If an engine surge event occurs, the AD requires, before the next flight, inspecting that engine for evidence of second stage stator vanes rubbing on the compressor rotor.
Two Model 35A Learjets were scheduled to depart from the Denver area Saturday morning carrying a collection of food, medicine and supplies to Honduras to aid survivors of Hurricane Mitch. The genesis of the mercy mission was a suggestion by corporate pilot Bob Pardo, who flies for Mayo Aviation, the Centennial Airport-based charter and air ambulance operator. He got ACX Technologies, his former employer, to donate its Learjet for the flight and Mayo volunteered one of its aircraft.
HONEYWELL/RACOM's Aero-I SATCOM (satellite communications) won certification from the United Kingdom's Civil Aviation Authority on board a Cessna 406 turboprop. The system was installed on two 406s by a company called Direct Flight, which will operate both planes for the U.K. Ministry of Fisheries. Honeywell/Racom said the recent certification, the first for the unit in Europe, shows the applicability of the Aero-I SATCOM system to smaller aircraft because the system can operate effectively with smaller antennas.
BANYAN AIR SERVICE added an instrument shop to its 16,000-square-foot avionics facility at Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Executive Airport. With the addition of the shop, Banyan has received FAA approval to overhaul and certify most remote directional and vertical gyros, including Collins, King, Honeywell and Sperry instruments. The shop also is producing a reduced vertical separation minimums pitot-static test set to sell to other instrument shops.
MATT NELSON was named manager of Duncan Aviation's Denver, Colo. satellite avionics facility. Nelson, who has been with Duncan aviation for 10 years, formerly managed the Van Nuys satellite shop.
THE INFLUX of "green" Global Express airplanes into Bombardier's completion center in Montreal in coming months is triggering a logistical chain reaction for Bombardier. Challenger completions are being moved from Montreal to the company's recently expanded facility in Tucson where Learjet completions also are done. To help ease the load in Tucson, Bombardier recently reached an agreement with Midcoast Aviation to move some Challenger completions to the St. Louis firm's facilities. Midcoast is expected to do about five Challenger completions next year.
