Aerostar has opened its new aircraft maintenance facility in northeast Romania after receiving the necessary approvals from regulators last month.
The facility, located at Iasi International Airport around 80 mi. north east of Aerostar’s existing MRO site in Bacau, will initially service Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 aircraft families across a space of 90,000 ft.2 manned by around 100 technical staff.
Coinciding with its opening is also the addition of some new capabilities. These include the installation of supplemental type certificate modifications, spanning several connectivity products.
The new hangar will also give the company extra capacity away from Bacau, where in 2019 it recorded more than 100 C checks and D checks on A320 and 737 aircraft.
Turkish carrier Pegasus Airlines will be the Iasi facility's first customer, with an input on one of its LEAP-1A-powered A320neo aircraft.
This work between the two parties stretches back several years, and follows on from Aerostar performing Europe's first base maintenance inspection on a LEAP-1A-powered A320neo in 2018.
Last year, the company told Aviation Week that it expects the three-bay hangar to increase Aerostar’s throughput of A320ceo and neo as well as Boeing 737 classic and NG overhauls by up to 40%.
