SINGAPORE—Asia Digital Engineering (ADE), the engineering arm of AirAsia parent Capital A, has opened a new hangar in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, and is offering its MRO services to third party clients beyond the LCC giant.
Situated at Johor Bahru Sinai airport, the 5,000 m² (54,000 ft.²) hangar will provide services, including component support, line maintenance, and base maintenance for primarily the Airbus A320 and A330, aircraft types AirAsia group currently operates.
Capital A CEO Tony Fernandes said ADE was created more than 20 years ago to serve AirAsia and lower operating costs. Using the group’s digital eco-system, ADE was able to benefit using data science to increase efficiency, reliability and productivity for the fleet, Fernandes said.
“Upon opening the doors to this hangar facility, it will further expand ADE’s presence in aircraft engineering to economically bustling countries in Asia Pacific,” he said.
ADE CEO Mahesh Kumar said part of the roadmap includes establishing a training school for aviation professionals and aerospace engineering students. ADE will also expand its expertise to additional aircraft types in the future.
ADE has regulatory approvals from India, Malaysia, Philippines, and Singapore.
The Southeast Asia region is among the world’s largest for operating A320 family aircraft. Aviation Week Network’s Fleet Discovery data show that 10 Southeast Asian countries have 789 active A320s/A321s in service.
