Collins Aerospace is opening a new multi-million dollar facility near Fort Worth, Texas on Feb. 20 to expand its military landing gear manufacturing capability and to add wheel and brake maintenance services for airlines in the region.
Having commercial wheel and brake capabilities in the Dallas-Fort Worth area places Collins closer to customers such as American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Envoy and United Airlines, so it’s not surprising that it expects to primarily service wheels and brakes for Boeing 737, Airbus A320 and Embraer ERJ145 from the new facility.
Collins previously served these customers mostly at its wheel and brake MRO sites in Louisville, Kentucky and in Los Angles—although it also offers those services in Wichita, Kanas, London and Hong Kong.
Wheels are typically serviced in intervals measured by months whereas brakes can remain on an aircraft for years.
Prior to this opening in Haltom City, Texas, Collins operated a military landing gear facility in Fort Worth since 2012, but this new 110,000-sq.-ft. building will provide 30% more space for these services than its previous location. It performs final assembly for landing gear on aircraft such as F-15, F-16, F/A-18 and the three variants of the F-35.
The facility in Haltom City will be about equally split between the military landing gear assembly and airline wheel and brake services.
