HAECO Xiamen’s hangar at the new Xiang’an airport will be the largest in the world.
HAECO Xiamen has broken ground at China’s new Xiamen Xiang’an International Airport for what will be the world’s largest single-span hangar.
Once completed in 2025, HAECO Xiamen will move its MRO operations from Xiamen Gaoqi Airport to the Xiang’an facility, which will have total interior space of 292,300 m2 (3.1 million ft.2) and an apron area of 284,000 m2. Eighteen new structures will be built, including engine test bays, a utility tunnel and a fuel supply. The hangar itself encompasses 12 widebody and six narrowbody maintenance bays, plus two separate painting bays.
The hangar will feature a “center-axle” design that connects the hangars and ancillary buildings, which is intended to facilitate logistics management and resource sharing. The site will utilize solar power and have intelligent building management systems, intelligent lighting controls, water storage and air conditioning systems, as well as wastewater and air treatment, to improve its efficiency.
Hong Kong-headquartered HAECO said the Xiang’an project marks its largest single investment since the group’s inception.
Xiang’an International as a whole is expected to cost CNY62 billion ($9.7 billion). It will have an initial passenger handling capacity of 45 million annually, expanding to 85 million once it is fully built out.
