Iberia Maintenance is progressing with plans to boost its heavy maintenance business through its latest MRO agreement. It has signed a contract with Spanish low-cost-carrier Volotea to perform C check overhauls on the airline’s Airbus A320s. The agreement begins in January 2023 and will run for 5.5 years.
Under the contract, Iberia Maintenance will carry out C checks at its facilities in Madrid and Barcelona during the winter seasons. Iberia says the facilities have a combined six hangars with 16 positions, as well as workshops to carry out maintenance and material management services for the aircraft and associated engines.
Volotea, which transitioned to a full Airbus fleet in 2021, plans to add six A320s this year. It operates a total of 41 aircraft, including A319s and A320s.
“This agreement with Volotea contributes to the continued consolidation of Iberia Maintenance as a reference supplier in Southern Europe for all MRO services and will also give a boost to Iberia’s project to develop the heavy maintenance business in Barcelona,” says Javier Sanchez-Prieto, president and CEO of Iberia.
As part of this heavy maintenance development, Iberia Maintenance last summer expanded to full base maintenance services in Barcelona for both in-house and third-party customer work. The site is initially focusing on A320 aircraft.
In October 2021 it also began performing C checks in Barcelona for Vueling’s A320ceos and A320neos.
