New Aviation Products Target Safer Hangar And Cockpit Operations
Cargo, Cockpit and Fire Protection
Company: AmSafe Bridport
UK-headquartered AmSafe Bridport manufactures aerospace and defense industry cargo restraint and fire protection products. In addition to engineering, manufacturing and testing its products, it provides 24/7 aircraft-on-ground (AOG) and aftermarket spares support through its partner distribution network across Asia, Europe and the U.S. AmSafe Bridport also holds FAA and European Union Aviation Safety Agency Part 145 certification to repair its product line. The company recently designed a secondary cockpit barrier product in anticipation of impending FAA regulations for new-to-market U.S. aircraft, which come into effect in 2025. The textile-based secondary barrier provides at least a 5-sec. delay for intruders attempting to enter the cockpit and can be fully customized to work around all monuments and aircraft layouts.

Cockpit Smoke Emergency Innovation
Company: Klatt Works
Klatt Works specializes in electro-optical and mechanical systems for the aviation industry such as head-worn displays to simplify maintenance processes. The company has developed an augmented reality product called SAVED (Smoke Assured Vision Enhanced Display) to help pilots navigate through cockpit smoke emergencies that impede their ability to see instruments or through windows. SAVED provides a see-through display of the aircraft’s nose-mounted camera inside a pilot’s oxygen mask, which is overlaid with critical flight information via head-up display symbology. The technology has received a new and novel supplemental type certificate (STC) from the FAA for use on the Boeing 777F, and Klatt Works is working on STCs for the 757, 767 and MD-11. Klatt Works recently announced a deal with FedEx under which the cargo carrier will install SAVED on its fleet of 777Fs.

Aircraft Hangar Fire Detection
Company: Spectrex
Spectrex provides industrial flame detectors for commercial and military aircraft hangars to monitor and prevent fires from aviation fuel leaks. The company says its detectors provide long-range detection and a wide field of view to enable coverage of large aircraft hangars with few detectors. Its recently launched Spectrex 40/40 Series Flame Detector includes QuadSense technology, which uses two sets of triple-infrared detection engines in a single enclosure to detect hydrocarbon-based fuel and gas fires at up to 300 ft. in under 50 millisec. The product has certified detection of 28 substances, including aviation fuels, hydraulic oils, paints and solvents. Spectrex is part of Emerson’s measurement instrumentation business; it is headquartered in Shakopee, Minnesota, with global manufacturing and sales offices.
